Right now, many of us are worried about others—including their mental health. Now more than ever, we need effective skills to watch over our friends, family, and co-workers and keep them safe. LivingWorks Start and CMHA have partnered together to provide a simple, powerful online training program to help us recognize the signs of suicide and take meaningful action to protect others. No matter who we are, every one of us can make a difference in suicide prevention.
LivingWorks ‘Start’ is a 90-minute, online training program that will teach you how to recognize when someone is having thoughts of suicide and to take meaningful action to keep them safe.
The ‘Start’ Experience
Accessible via any computer, smartphone, or tablet, LW Start includes customization, simulations, and interactive content. You’ll learn about suicide and its prevention, receive personalized information, and gain a series of skills to keep someone safe and alive.
A “Find Safety” button is present throughout the training to connect you to supporting resources if you experience any distress. Once you’ve completed the training, you can practice additional scenarios and access ongoing resources.
When you sign up for LivingWorks Start training, you’ll learn a powerful four-step model to keep someone safe from suicide, and you’ll have a chance to practice it with impactful simulations.
Who should take Start?
Start is an ideal option for anyone who wants to help keep others safe, regardless of prior background or experience. Start can be taken by anyone 18 years and up. For those 15-17 years, collaboration with a parent or guardian is recommended.

Request a Follow–Up Call for Start
Through CMHA’s experience of offering Start to our staff and volunteers, we’ve learned that, offering participants a chance to discuss their training experience as a follow-up, can help to clarify understandings and reinforce Start learnings. With this in mind, CMHA is offering individuals chance to review their Start training experience by phone with one of our trained staff. You can call 204-775-6442 to speak with one of our specialists.
For Businesses
‘Start’ is also the ideal way to bring life-saving suicide prevention skills to your organization as it will prepare your employees to play a life-saving role, and build a powerful safety network for your employees and those they support. Workplaces, schools, colleges, hospitals, and military bases are some of the many organizations around the world using LivingWorks ‘Start’.
